• characterizes the information carried by a given representation in a brain or model. Contains a cell for each pair of experimental conditions, which cell has a number reflecting the dissimilarity between the activity patterns associated with the two conditions. As a consequence, the matrix is symmetric about a diagonal of zeros. A fundamental challenge for systems neuroscience is to quantitatively relate its three major branches of research: brain-activity measurement, behavioral measurement, and computational modeling.
