  13. pheochromocytoma(English)

    • catecholamine producing neuroendocrine tumor that can be adrenal or extra-adrenal in origin. The classic symptoms of pheochromocytoma are headache, palpitation, anxiety and diaphoresis and the tumor can occur at any age with equal gender distribution. In patients with an established mutation or hereditary syndrome the condition may manifest at a younger age than in those with sporadic disease. Can be associated with certain genetic syndromes such as MEN 2, neurofibromatosis (NF) and von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome. Diagnosed with biochemical confirmation of hormonal excess followed by anatomical localization (CT or MRI). The mainstay of definitive therapy is surgical resection; aka PCC, PHEO

  14. Pacinian corpuscle(English)

    • an ovoid structure with sensitive mechanoreceptors, widely distributed in mammals, similar to the Herbst corpuscles found in birds. On microscopic examination, the lamellar structure of the corpuscle is evident, giving an appearance which has been likened to a section through an onion. The corpuscle is innervated by a myelinated sensory axon of medium diameter which terminates within the center of the corpuscle. There it loses its myelin and terminates as an unmyelinated axon

  15. pharmacological chaperone(English)

    • hallmark is its ability to bind a protein specifically and stabilize it. This property can be beneficial for curing diseases that are associated with protein mutants that are intrinsically active but unstable. The total activity of the affected proteins in the cell is lower than normal because they are cleared by the quality control system. Although most pharmacological chaperones are reversible competitive inhibitors or antagonists of their target proteins, the inhibitory activity is neither required nor desirable. This issue is well documented by specific examples among which those concerning Fabry disease. Direct specific binding is not the only mechanism by which small molecules can rescue mutant proteins in the cell

  17. plasma cell [disorder](English)

    • includes an heterogeneous spectrum of diseases, from pre-malignant conditions with variable rates of progression for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering myeloma (SMM) to symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM). Homing, behavior and survival of normal PC, but also CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), B-cell precursors, and clonal PC largely depends on their interaction with stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) expressing, potentially overlapping BM stromal cell niches

    • technique uses a second microcatheter to produce a proximal occlusion to prevent the reflux of liquid embolic agent (LEA) injected through a more distal microcatheter, and can be used to treat arteriovenous malformations and dural arteriovenous fistulae. The liquid embolic Magic Glue (MG) (N-hexyl cyanoacrylate (NHCA)) has been introduced as an alternative to N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA). Our goals were to compare the extent of embolization of rete mirabile with or without the PC technique using NBCA or MG, and to compare the proximal occlusions obtained with MG or NBCA while using the PC technique in a renal arterial model
