  • disorder of the middle ear characterized by the presence of cholesteatoma, which is a sac-like structure lined by squamous epithelium with bone eroding properties. Almost always requires surgical treatment in the form of canal wall down mastoidectomy with type III tympanoplasty for hearing augmentation. Many patients have ossicular erosion necessitating intraoperative removal of the ossicles.
