combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema(English)

  • initially described as predominantly upper lobe emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis of the lower lungs. However, histopathological analyses of lung explants from patients suffering from IPF and emphysema showed that the coexistence of fibrosis and emphysema in each lobe was rather common. This frequent (30%) co-manifestation of two pulmonary diseases, which share the same primary risk factor of smoking, may have worse prognosis than IPF alone, with resulting PH being the major determinant of morbidity and mortality
