central line–associated bloodstream infection(English)
- the most common complication of central venous catheters, with an incidence of 4.1 per 1000 central line days. Associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and medical costs, as those patients have an 2.75-time higher risk for hospital death than those without. This complication is largely preventable when evidence-based guidelines for the insertion and maintenance of CVCs are followed, such as hand washing, using full-barrier precautions during central venous catheter insertion, cleaning the skin with chlorhexidine, and removing unnecessary catheters
