- equation that has been developed to overcome some of the limitations of the MDRD equation which significantly underestimates reference GFR values in the normal-high range in people with and without diabetes. The CKD-EPI equation also contains a spline term for serum creatinine (at 62 µmol/L for females and 80 µmol/L for males) to account for the weaker relationship between serum creatinine and GFR at lower compared with higher creatinine levels
