VGCC

voltage-gated calcium channel(English)

  • transmembrane protein that is activated by membrane depolarization and the activation allows the entry of Ca2 + in the cell, which is important for the elicitation of secondary processes. There are six types of which, N-type VGCCs are located in the neurones and thus important in pain sensation. Ziconotide was the first compound to be discovered to work through the inhibition of N-type VGCC. Binding of the opioid analgesics to opioid receptors results in the modulation of N and P/Q-type VGCCs leading to a disruption of Ca2 + influx in the cell. In addition to neuronal cells, T-type VGCCs are also located in cardiac and smooth muscle tissues and distributed throughout the body. Distribution of P/Q-type is same as that of N-type VGCC; aka VDCC
