pluripotent stem cell(English)
- undifferentiated cell that is capable of differentiating into all three embryonic germ layers and the differentiated derivatives. Transiently present during embryonic development but can also be maintained as established cell lines. Those lines can be derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts (ESCs), primordial germ cells (embryonic germ cells), or from tumorigenic derivatives of germinal tissues. The primary advantage of these cell lines is that they can be maintained in vitro indefinitely without undergoing cell senescence while preserving their wide developmental and self-renewal potentials. One fascinating feature of PSCs is their ability to de-differentiate somatic cells by fusion. This is achieved by resetting the epigenetic marks that distinguish somatic cells from undifferentiated embryonic cells and is exhibited by re-establishment of methylation patterns that are characteristic of early embryonic cells
