  • a lumbar vertebra can be divided into three functional elements: vertebral body, posterior elements, and pedicles connecting the vertebral body with the posterior elements. The posterior elements are formed by the two laminae with their respective processes: two transverse, four articular, and one spinous process. Whereas the shape of the two upper (L1 and L2) and lower (L4 and L5) lumbar segments is transitional toward their neighboring spinal regions (the thoracic and sacral spine, respectively), L3 can be regarded as a “typical” lumbar vertebra
