  13. intestinal permeability(English)

    • energy-rich high-fat diets enhance intestinal permeability resulting in metabolic endotoxinemia. The Western style diet, characterized by a high amount of fat and carbohydrates, induces similar or even more pronounced changes. Among dietary sugars, fructose plays a particular role with regard to the intestinal barrier. The onset of fructose-induced NAFLD is associated with intestinal bacterial overgrowth and increased intestinal permeability, subsequently leading to an endotoxin-dependent activation of hepatic Kupffer cells. The techniques used for permeability and integrity assessment vary depending on the setting (in vitro versus in vivo measurements), the species, the marker molecules used for assessment (ions, carbohydrates of different sizes, macromolecules and antigens, bacterial products and bacteria), and the compartments used for measurement of the marker molecules (peripheral blood, portal vein blood, urine)

  15. inositol phosphate(English)

    • produced as a result of the hydrolysis of inositol phospholipids (phosphoinositides) located mainly in the inner half of the plasma membrane. It is the breakdown of one class of these inositol phospholipids known as phosphatidyl bisphosphate (PIP2) which is most important, even though it only accounts for less than 10% of the total inositol lipids and less than 1% of all the phospholipids in the cell membrane
