- caused by disorders such as preeclampsia, maternal smoking, and abnormalities of uteroplacental development. Leads to a permanent decrease in the expression of Pdx-1 in the beta cell that is associated with silencing histone modifications at the proximal promoter of Pdx-1 in the fetal and early postnatal period followed by an increase in DNA methylation in the same region by 6–10 months of age
