    • process used for plasma that can safely inactivate all lipid-enveloped viruses. The major advantages over fresh frozen plasma and the other pathogen-inactivated plasmas are its extreme safety with respect to transfusion-related acute lung injury and the significantly lower likelihood of provoking allergic reactions

  7. seborrheic dermatitis(English)

    • one of the most common chronic and relapsing inflammatory skin disorder. The bimodal presentation of the disease, at birth and post-pubertal, suggests that it is related to sexual hormones. The pathobiology remains poorly understood but yeast of the genus Malassezia has long been regarded as the central predisposing factor, but this etiology cannot easily explain the effective treatment of SD symptoms with weak topical steroids, nor the much-discussed relationship of SD to dandruff and psoriasis. Genetic predisposition and interactions with environmental factors-including, but not restricted to, sebaceous gland hyperactivity, epidermal barrier functions, host immune function, nutrition, neurologic conditions such as Parkinson's disease, psychiatric conditions, immunosuppression, changes in epidermal barrier integrity, some medications and seasonal changes. The commensal Malassezia yeast may take over in an altered microbial environment and then trigger the inflammatory response and the SD condition

  8. semantic dementia(English)

    • the fluent type of progressive aphasia and is primarily associated with temporal lobe involvement. Onset is insidious and the course of the impairment is progressive, characterized by effortless, fluent, grammatical speech. Repetition and writing skills are basically intact. By contrast, word production (e.g., in picture naming) and word comprehension are impaired. As in fluent aphasia, speech often appears empty, due to the increased use of vague terms. Word substitutions (semantic paraphasias) are common, especially as the dementia progresses. The lexical deficit can indicate loss of semantic knowledge
