isolated splenic vein thrombosis(English)

  • usually results in left-side portal hypertension and isolated gastric fundal varices. The most common cause is chronic pancreatitis, with a reported incidence of up to 45%. Occasionally splenic vein thrombosis has been described in relation to pancreatic pseudotumor, pancreatic pseudocyst, retroperitoneal abscess, renal neoplasms, perirenal abscess, and segmental splenic vein resection during removal of a pancreatic tumor (iatrogenic cause). The triad of gastric varices with splenomegaly and normal liver function is highly suspicious. Usually, splenic vein obstruction is diagnosed after a bleeding episode related to recurrent gastric varices. The accuracy of US to diagnose may be limited and other imaging techniques such as CT or MRI are often needed
