Approximately 30% of cancerous breast lesions have allelic loss of IRF1 when compared with the adjacent normal breast stroma. Furthermore, approximately, 50% of breast cancer patients with BRCA1 mutations also express heterozygous IRF1, highlighting the importance of IRF1 as a breast cancer tumor suppressor gene
