    • arises from the left anterior surface of the aorta at the level of the third lumbar vertebral body. Initially retroperitoneal, the IMA branches as it enters the sigmoid mesocolon before giving rise to the left colic, sigmoidal, and superior rectal vessels. The IMA branches perfuse the large bowel from the mid-distal transverse colon to the upper rectum, including the sigmoid colon. Several rich, clinically significant, and highly variable collateral networks exist between branches of the left colic vessels and the SMA, including at the splenic flexure (Griffith point) and sigmoidal arteries and the superior rectal vessels (Sudek point). These collateral pathways are particularly important when rectosigmoid or splenic flexure resection is performed
