- an experimental animal model of human malignant hypertension. These rats display a 95% incidence of stroke, and cerebral ischemia provokes a massive efflux of glutamate, which causes neuronal death in the hippocampus. Reperfusion after ischemia increases the extent of neuronal death secondary to apoptosis, but pretreating the animals with vitamin E decreases neuronal cell death
