There are multiple definitions:
obstructive sleep apnea(English)
- characterized by episodes of complete collapse of the airway or partial collapse with an associated decrease in oxygen saturation or arousal from sleep. This disturbance results in fragmented, nonrestorative sleep. Has significant implications for cardiovascular health, mental illness, quality of life, and driving safety. Females appear to be more symptomatic, with lower apnoea–hypopnea index scores compared to males. Furthermore, they appear to have more prolonged partial upper airway obstruction, and may report insomnia as a symptom of OSAHS more frequently. As a consequence of these differences in clinical presentation, females with sleep disordered breathing are often underdiagnosed and undertreated compared to males. The prevalence of sleep apnea is increased in aging women. This increase is linked primarily to a more collapsible airway and possibly to reduced responsiveness of upper airway muscle activity
