OGF

overnight gastric feeding(English)

  • infants with glycogen storage disease require soy-based, sugar-free formulas and enteral feedings, while lactose is fed on demand every 2–3 hours. Once the infant is able to sleep longer than 3–4 hours at a time, several decisions must be made to avoid hypoglycemia during the overnight fast. One option is to continue to wake the infant every 3–4 hours to monitor BG and offer feedings. Another option is to use OGFs. Due to the life-threatening risks of severe hypoglycemia causing seizures, permanent brain damage, and even death in GSD I, it is recommended that the parents (and/or child, when older) be trained in inserting a nasogastric tube
