ER-alpha

estrogen receptor subtype alpha(English)

  • nuclear transcription factor that is involved in the regulation of many complex physiological processes in humans. Modulation of these receptors by prospective therapeutic agents is currently being considered for prevention and treatment of a wide variety of pathological conditions, such as, cancer, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, inflammation, and osteoporosis. Present mainly in mammary gland, uterus, ovary (thecal cells), bone, male reproductive organs (testes and epididymis), prostate (stroma), liver, and adipose tissue. In view of the beneficial actions in non-reproductive tissues, such as bone, brain, and urogenital tract, estrogens would be ideal drugs if they did not have serious adverse effects, consisting mainly of increasing the risk of breast and endometrial cancer, as well as of thromboembolisms and strokes
